Shadow

The Shadow

A shadow, suspended above the abyss,
That watery chasm that swallows thoughts
Of civilization, population, existence.
The only light is his lantern, a light
That brings him here at 3am each morning,
Clearing the fog, and clearing the mind.

Bobbing, the shadow does not fight the waves,
He listens to the splash of tiny prawns
In the shallows, a comforting sound.
He is peaceful, lonely and content,
He is not lost, he is vanished and he is waiting
For a flathead, throwing back the yabby.

The moon, the largest light shines down,
High dunes and luscious green hills surround
The field of dampness, but so far away.
Beneath, life keeps moving and breathing,
Above, life stops and there is a feeling
Of the earth holding it’s breath for a moment.

He floats, alone in his dingy holding a stubby,
The other hand holds the fishing rod dangling
The line leading to the end, following the current.
Rime, his eyes close as he concentrates,
Through the gloom you can see him shiver
And hear, as he pulls the chord, “Bloody nuthin’”.

Lazy holidays. I thought I'd share with you some photos I've taken for my Media project. They aren't the final products just some playing around with black and white. I've chucked in one of me in my outfit before seeing the band 'Ryan Meeking and the Few'. They're truly great! 5 stars. As I sit here watching the original The Karate Kid I realise that the lead's name is Daniel, my brothers name, and the lead girl's name is Allie, not quite my name but close...hmmmmm conspiracy? So anyway, keep it cool and I'll soon be recording on my new mixer!

EIGHTEEN

All photography by Gemma Watts

A hectic week full of make-up, hairspray, sore feet and feathers. The formal was amazing. Sad to think it was the last time I had the chance to do it. I had lots of fun and an exciting night out afterwards! On Saturday night my friends and I went out for dinner to celebrate my 18th birthday. I give World restaurant five stars. Found on Southbank Melbourne it had a great menu, stylish interior and friendly staff. My birthday party was a huge success! Everybody looked absolutely amazing.

My formal outfit: Dress - Forever New, Shoes - Payless (yes I went for the cheap store and found the best shoes), Hair and make-up - myself, Jewellery - Forever New
My party outfit: Dress - Sportsgirl, Boots - Payless, Hair and make-up - myself, Mask - Lombards with cequins, gems, pearls and feathers added my myself

Spirituality

Yes indeed, I have turned 18. I'm a big girl now...kinda. I am yet to post photos of my week of eighteeness but I just had to share with you some interesting facts about native American totems! No I haven't gone all spiritual, however as I am researching my next big art project I have discovered an interest in animals and their meanings.

I have always had a fascination for Giraffes. They are absolutely stunning creatures. It is said that they are about grounded vision and symbolise communication, intuition, attaining the unreachable and seeing the future. They remind us that we are physical creatures and teach us to view our lives in a way that is both grounded and expansive. Besides these facts I believe they are graceful and the pattern on their bodies is fun and beautiful.

Recently I had a dream about an army of baby red back spiders crawling out from my desk and across my room! I often have dreams about spiders or snakes following or chasing me. The spider is known to depict any emotions you don't want to 'handle', such as those surrounding a spouse leaving, or feeling trapped by someone; the basic survival instincts in us such as a spider might have - can I eat, or will I be eaten in this meeting/relationship? Perhaps the spiders represent my feeling of being eaten alive by the pressure of school and responsibility leading up to my coming of age, forcing the want to run away.
The snake is said to depict the force or energy behind that movement and purpose - the force of life, the latent energy or potential within matter - that leads us both to growth and death, along with the passionate emotions and urges that drive us so powerfully. This could also be in relation to my recent interest in finding my ideal course at university and urge to move on. It could also represent any emotional times I've had and how I often throw myself into tears as a result. Or do I really need to find my true purpose in life?

Following this interest in animals and their meanings I have researched the history of native American totem poles.

It was fascinating to discover that there is no actual evidence of totem poles being constructed before the later 1800s. This is because wood rots and the totem poles fall over. It is also said that totem poles were only created once Europeans had entered America and provided the tools used for their construction. Although it may seem boring I have always had a great interest in history and found this topic a fantastic one to research both historically and artistically.

So once I have saved the images of my weekend on my laptop I will post them so you can see my outfits and fun from the formal and my birthday partying :)

Pina Colada

Photography: Gemma Watts
Outfit:I was going for the "French girl" look - Beret from France, Jacket from Vinnies, Cardigan is Roxy, Mum's white singlet, Skirt from Sportsgirl, black stockings and grey Ankle boots from Betts.

"Yes I like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food
I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon
And cut through all this red-tape
At a bar called O'Malley's
Where we'll plan our escape."

These lyrics explain the weekend swimmingly. Well not the O'Malley's bit but the rest was great. A Pino Colada, 1/4 of a Cosmo, a magical tropical mix (made up recipe) and 3 jelly shots = a fun night :) I don't drink much very often but I do enjoy Malibu mixed with pineapple juice. It's a shame that cocktails are expensive to buy when you go out. Speaking of going out, I AM 18 ON SATURDAY! And the formal is on Friday night so there will be many interesting photos to follow of fun and fashion. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my friend who turned 18 on Sunday (hence the partying on Saturday) and hope all is well with everyone.

ALSO! I'm close to finishing my art work and I've completed my visual communications and design folio EEEEEEEEEE! I will post photos, however I must first check if it is legal as it has to pass through VCAA.

Got this dress too so can cross it off my list :D

Future

The end of an era. The play has now finished and I'm pushed back down to earth where the evil creatures lurk. Pressuresaurus: the creature that doesn't leave your side constantly knawing at your ankles telling you to do something you really don't want to. Studyion: the creature that sits on your desk staring at you with it's unattractive eyes and breathing down your neck with that wretched breath, the stench that seems to seep from each page of your text books. And worst of all...Futureama-rex: that one evil creature which lurks in the darkness and jumps out unexpectedly grasping your weakened arm and shining light on your flaws, inflicting feelings of anxiety, pain and depression. Ever been attacked by these demons? I have found a solution! To temporarily relieve yourselves from these evils play the sweet and joyful sounds of Coby Grant, Lisa Mitchell and The Sundance Kids. Although it does not fight these creatures it kicks them up the butt for at least an hour in order for you to recover from their damage.
However, their enemy, the creature of the complete opposite nature which instills confidence in you...Mummybear! This creature preys on unhappiness, bringing out the confidence and pride within you that you thought had been drowned among tears and blotched by puffy eyelids, ensuring your success in life no matter what evil creatures fight you.

Speaking of success, what an unexpected success 'Much Ado About Nothing' was! Everything really came together at the very last minute! And I never thought I'd make friends liek the ones I have gained from this experience. And the compliments! My God! I never really thought of myself as an actress, I've always been the musician. Let me quote the year 8 kid who jumped in front of me on my way to class the other day, "Hey! You! You were really good in the play." WOO! Hahaha I've had various compliments and shit however that one really made me feel happy about myself. And sad that it is over and I have to keep doing stuff I hate. Boo. So, here I am rambling about my boring year 12 life and searching for interesting blogs instead of reading Frankenstein (a great piece of literature but...blaaaah blaaah blaaah blaaaah) or talking to my boyfriend. I wish I had a "look" to give you but I don't have time for those things, but here is a painting by Rupert Bunny created in 1892 (I think). It pleases me and makes me feel calm :)

As Seamus Heaney translated the opening sentence in the poem Beowulf, "So." The first performance (to annoying giggly year high school students) of Much Ado About Nothing was performed today. Besides a few "He says-no she-wait he says.." moments and complete remake of sentences it went OK. The costumes were fun! Juliet Bennie, my dear little friend has worked her butt off amidst the learning of lines as the co-leading role, tafe study and vce classes. She's done a fantabulous job of getting as many op shop clothes and taking them back in time to make them appear 1920's style. More photos shall follow I'm sure! I've also been a little bit too excited/eager to be 18 and began scanning baby pictures for my 18th birthday party slide show. Here is a few of my favourites from my younger years. Gotta say I'm a pretty cute kid. So wish me "break a leg" for the rest for this week juggling a folio deadlines, mid-year exam preparation and performances...oh god.
